AI is already having an impact on medical publications and communications, and it will continue to play a pivotal role in reshaping the landscape of our profession and practices.
“As ISMPP began seeking and receiving input from our members when ChatGPT and other AI technologies were being more widely introduced earlier this year, it became apparent that focused efforts to determine and meet the needs of medical publication and communication professionals were of paramount importance,” said Robert Matheis, President and CEO, ISMPP.

An ISMPP AI Task Force was established this past May, co-chaired by Keith Goldman of AbbVie and Matt Lewis of Inizio, to develop AI-targeted guidance, education, and tools/resources, resulting in the creation of the ISMPP AI Position Statement and Call to Action.
- The AI Position Statement urges medical publication and communication professionals to commit to various important elements, including appropriate utilization and disclosure of AI, driving accountability, ensuring responsibility and trust, and maintaining confidentiality, among others.
- The Call to Action for ISMPP Members spotlights the vital, leading role that ISMPP members should play in becoming educated and trained on AI; implementing and using AI responsibly, transparently, and fairly; and advocating for and actively engaging with AI within and beyond their organizations.
ISMPP members and our broader community are encouraged to gain familiarity with and implement the principles in the ISMPP AI Position Statement and Call to Action, which will be updated as it becomes necessary to reflect current practices and developments. ISMPP AI Task Force co-chairs and members will be presenting information about the AI Position Statement and Call to Action at the upcoming ISMPP U webinar on Wednesday, November 8, and at ISMPP conferences in 2024.
