It’s Here! ISMPP is thrilled to announce the release of its Authorship Algorithm Tool, a web-based tool designed to help you better determine contributions to criterion 1 for authorship based on the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals.

Author eligibility based on ICMJE criterion 1 can be challenging, particularly for multicenter trials with a large number of investigators and contributors. ICMJE criterion 1 states, “Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work.”

The ISMPP Authorship Task Force recently published its findings and recommendations for an objective and consistent interpretation of ICMJE criterion 1 in Current Medical Research and Opinion (CMRO), “Building Consensus on Author Selection Practices for Industry-sponsored Research: Recommendations from an Expert Task Force of Medical Publication Professionals.1

“Optimizing decisions surrounding authorship of medical publications, particularly criterion 1, has been a long-standing need for ethical author eligibility practices. On behalf of ISMPP’s Authorship Task Force, we are excited to offer access to the user-friendly ISMPP Authorship Algorithm Tool for FREE to COMPANIES to better manage and evolve authorship practices at their company,” said Robert Matheis, ISMPP President & CEO.

The Task Force recommendations allow for an author eligibility process grounded in the core principles of substantial, intellectual contribution to the research conception or design, or to the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data. The Authorship Algorithm Tool provides a web-based mechanism for scoring and weighting author contributions using the sub-criteria below of ICMJE criterion 1.

  • Research idea
  • Protocol/methodology
  • Statistical analysis
  • Acquisition of data
  • Data analysis
  • Data interpretation

Supporting resources will include a Checklist to aid cross-functional teams in documenting contributions throughout a clinical trial to gather sufficient information that will enable authorship decision-making before the start of publication development.
