In the face of challenges and opportunities arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the evolution occurring in our profession, the first-ever virtual format of the 2021 European Meeting of ISMPP, January 26-27, tackled the theme, Collaboration, connectivity and change: A holistic view of the scientific communications environment in 2021. We were thrilled to host more than 300 attendees!

Participants, and those who did not participate in the virtual event, have several options to explore the 2021 European Meeting:

  • Attendees can access recordings of the live and on-demand sessions, as well as member research posters, on the meeting’s Whova app, until March 31, 2021. ISMPP members can access session slide decks in PDF format, and member research posters, in the European Meeting Archive after March 31, 2021.
  • The Publication Plan has posted excellent summaries from Day 1 and Day 2 of the 2021 European Meeting.
  • The ISMPP U webinar on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, will spotlight member research presented at the 2021 European Meeting, in particular poster award winners and select poster presentations.

Keynotes, Plenaries, and On-Demand Sessions

Two keynote speakers presented on the contemporary topics of misinformation and ableism:

  • The Challenges of Communicating Covid-19 Science During an Era of Misinformation
    • Tracey Brown, OBE, Director of Sense about Science
  • Ableism in Medical Research and Impact on Health Equality
    • Dr. Becca Wilson, UKRI Innovation Fellow with the HDR UK Institute of Population Health Sciences at the University of Liverpool

Plenary sessions were an engaging mix of speaker presentations and panel discussions. The sessions explored challenges and innovation in the changing times of our publications and scientific communications ecosystem; dubious data and dangers of miscommunication with a lay audience; stakeholders’ views on the needs, expectations, and future of scientific communications; and our evolving professional practices and what might last long-term.

Parallel sessions were available on-demand, with an opportunity for chat Q&A with the faculty. Topics covered patient engagement in publications, informatics and data visualization, and real-world evidence. Other on-demand sessions provided a Year-in-Review and informative updates on CMPP and ISMPP.

In honor of our esteemed faculty, ISMPP donated to Crowd Scholar, in support of high-achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Roundtables and New Networking Breakouts

Roundtable sessions addressed current issues and trends in conversations with peers. The meeting offered 9 Roundtable topics, including health literacy, open access and Plan S, virtual congresses, authorship best practices, consensus statements in a virtual setting, and mental health during changing times.

A new interactive offering – Networking Breakouts – afforded the opportunity for first-time attendees, those wanting to hear about the CMPP program and the ISMPP Advocacy & Outreach Committee, and those interested in a general discussion to connect with peers.

Member Research – A Record 42 Posters!

A record 42 posters were presented during the 2021 European Meeting. All member research was on display on our poster platform, provided by Envision Pharma Group. Attendees were able to ask questions of the poster authors during a real-time Q&A session.

Six oral presentations were selected from among the posters, which were accessible for viewing on-demand. Authors were available via real-time chatbox to answer attendee questions.

The following posters received awards in three categories, including the new category, Most Valuable Digital Poster Format or Enhancement. Congratulations to the poster award winners!

The Training Zone for New Professionals

The Training Zone, held as a satellite session on January 29, 2021, was tailored to those professionals who are new to publication planning. A multidisciplinary faculty of senior ISMPP members led a mix of educational presentations, interactive exercises, and lively group discussions to expand participant’s knowledge and provide valuable networking connections.
