Alternative, article-level publication metrics (“altmetrics”) provide publication planners with a powerful tool to understand the uptake and impact of individual publications. This graphic article provides an overview of the wide variety of article-level altmetrics available, and how they can be used to assess different types of audience engagement.
The article also describes some of the key providers of altmetrics and their different approaches to capturing and synthesizing them, as well as differences in the types of metrics that can be obtained from different providers. Lastly, it shows how these different approaches can affect the metrics reported for an example publication.
