In January 2017, the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA), European Medical Writers Association (EMWA), and International Society for Medical Publication Professionals (ISMPP) released their Joint Position Statement on the Role of Professional Medical Writers. One year after its release, the Joint Position Statement is now available in seven languages: Chinese, Japanese, German, Italian, French, Spanish, and English.
“The availability of the Joint Position Statement in multiple languages is a great achievement and meets a vital need for publication professionals from around the world – and those who work with them – to more easily read, understand, and apply its principles,” said Chris Winchester, chair-elect of ISMPP and member of EMWA.
The Joint Position Statement is the first unified position on the role of professional medical writers from three leading professional organizations. It describes best practices for professional medical writers, and provides a template for appropriately disclosing medical writing support.
Translations of the Joint Position Statement into the Chinese and Japanese languages are available on the ISMPP website. Translations into German, Italian, French, and Spanish are accessible on the EMWA website.
An encore poster on the development and communication of the Joint Position Statement will be presented at the upcoming European Meeting of ISMPP, January 23-24, 2018, in London. The original poster was presented at the AMWA Annual Conference in November 2017.
AMWA, EMWA, and ISMPP encourage their members to share information about the Joint Position Statement and the availability of the various translations with fellow peers, authors, and other interested individuals involved in medical publications.
ISMPP would like to express its appreciation to Cactus Communications, Ronnie Lin, and Eric Yu for their work on the Chinese translation of the Joint Position Statement, and to ThinkSCIENCE and Yumiko Imani for their efforts with the Japanese translation.
EMWA would also like to thank all of the following people for their excellent work in translating the Joint Position Statement: Marion Alzer and Susanne Geercken for the German, Tiziana von Bruchhausen and Andrea Rossi for the Italian, Laurence Auffret for the French, and Silvia Paz Ruiz and Eva Garcia Gonzalez for the Spanish versions.
