With 254 attendees participating in the European Meeting of ISMPP, January 17-18, 2017, in London, UK, the Society achieved a record-setting attendance for this increasingly popular conference. Building on its theme, The Evolving Role of Publication Professionals in a Multi-Stakeholder Environment, the meeting focused on addressing the need to share practical know-how with our multiple stakeholders to communicate scientific data effectively.

The keynote address by Carl Heneghan, professor of evidence-based medicine at Oxford, and AllTrials Campaign founder, centered on “Finding the Truth in Evidence That Matters,” and discussed the AllTrials campaign and the COMPare Trials Project. Plenary sessions highlighted:

  • The implications of sharing patient-level data in light of the Sharing Clinical Trial Data proposal of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Panelists included Philip J. Devereaux, McMaster University; Fiona Godlee, The British Medical Journal; Stuart Spencer, The Lancet; and Marie-Claire Pickaert, European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA).
  • An industry panel featuring senior publication professionals from the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, who shared their insights on managing challenges with data disclosure, adopting effective publication policies and procedures, and the evolving role of medical publication professionals.
  • Extending the reach of publications, with critical appraisals of the new formats available for extended reach and the best novel metrics to measure deliverables.

The parallel sessions introduced a new pilot session titled, The Learning Room, that covered the fundamentals of medical publications for those new to the profession, and was taught by senior medical publication experts who shared their knowledge and insights. Other parallel session topics addressed transfer of value from the European perspective, scientific communication platforms, patient-reported outcomes and patient engagement, and population-based registries.

The popular Roundtables session included five new topics applicable to the current medical publications environment – biosimilars, copyright, emerging markets, pipeline publications, and rare diseases. Member posters were on display throughout the meeting, and were spotlighted during “speed” research member presentations, and the Member Poster Session and Networking Reception, sponsored by Taylor & Francis Group.
